White, Charles A.; Report Upon the Invertebrate Fossils Collected in Portions of Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, by Parties of the Expeditions of 1871, 1872, 1873, and 1874. Report upon United States Geographical & Geological Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian. Vol. 4, Part 1, Invertebrate Fossils. Washington DC, GPO, 1875. Quarto, pp. 219, 21 plates.

The volume is complete and in a contemporary half calf over pebbled cloth with gilt spine titles, marbled text block edges and end sheets. Light wear to spine edges and corners nicely restored, owner’s book plate on front paste down, catalogue number on lower part of title page. Text and plates are very clean. In very good condition.

An American geologist and paleontologist, White (1826-1910) was the State geologist of Iowa prior to becoming a Professor of Natural History at the University of Iowa and then at Bowdoin College. In 1874; at the request of George M. Wheeler, White undertook the identification, cataloging and publication of the invertebrate fossils collected by the “Wheeler Survey West of the One Hundredth Meridian”. The resulting publication provides the first accurate study of the invertebrate fossils from those western regions.
