Rambosson, (1827-1886) was a French writer who wrote several works on astronomy, meteorites and gems. His above work on gemstones was first published in 1870 and was revised with numerous additions in 1884. The work is considered an excellent, largely descriptive text on gemstones and for many years was considered the definitive work on the subject. Even today it is considered a permanent reference. The work begins with a discussion of the formation of gemstones and their intriguing characteristics as well as their history in antiquity. This is followed by a valuable discussion of the diamond, famous diamonds and the prominent use of diamonds. The principal gemstones are then covered and this is followed by the principal types of jewelry and a newly added chapter on porcelain.
