Product Description

Hochstetter, Ferdinand von, & Petermann, A.; The Geology of New Zealand; in explanation of the Geographical and Topographical Atlas of New Zealand. From the scientific publications of the Novara Expedition. Also, lectures by Dr. F. Hochstetter delivered in New Zealand. T. Delattre, Auckland, 1864. Octavo, pp. 113.

The work is complete and in the original red cloth over soft boards with gilt cover titles. Minor scuffing to boards and light soiling to spine. Private library stamp of noted Australian geologist Rhodes Faribridge (1914-2006) on first end sheet. The text is clean with light toning. In very good condition.

Hochsteller (1829-1884) was a German geologist. He was originally on the staff of the Imperial Geological Survey of Austria but was chosen as the geologist to the Nova expedition (1857-59) and made numerous valuable geological studies during the voyage around the world. Part of his time was spent on North Island, New Zealand. His geological reports were published in: Reise der osterreichischen Fregatte Novara . Geologischer Theil. Erster Band. That work included the Geological and Topographical Atlas of New Zealand (1864). His above 113 age report was one of the publications and was also issued as a separate to the atlas. It is now agreed that Hochstetter’s geological map of the southern half of the Auckland Province was thee first professional attempt at a systematic geological map of a part of New Zealand.
