Oblong folio, pp. Tinted lithographed frontispiece and title page, 12 pages of text in double columns and 47 tinted lithographed plates, depicting German mining scenes and life in the mining industry.
The work is complete and in a later black cloth with white spine titles. The binding is tight and clean, the text and all plates are very clean and bright. Subscribers list at the start of the work shows 200 copies printed. In very good condition.
Eduard Heuchler (1801-1879) was born in Freiberg, Germany where he was educated at the Freiberg Mining Academy as an architect and devoted his career at the Academy as a professor. He died in Freiberg in 1879. Heuchler taught courses in mine construction, architecture, drawing and civil engineering.
His work “Die Bergknappen…) was printed on a limited subscription basis with approximately 200 copies. The plates depict mining scenes both above and below ground, the timbering on mines, ore extraction, milling processes and the family life of the miners. The plates are quite beautiful and detailed.
