Octavo, two text volumes bound in one and atlas volume. Vol. 1, pp. xii, 491, 123 text figures, numerous tables. Vol. 2, pp. 2, 532. Atlas, 60 plates, many folded.

The work is complete with the two text volumes bound as one in a cloth binding with gilt titles. The atlas is in the original title boards with a cloth tape spine. X-lib., Harvard College with their book plate and blind stamp and notation that the set is from the estate of noted geologist Nathaniel S. Shaler (1841-1906). Text is clean with light foxing and light stain at gutter of few pages, atlas with light foxing and light stain at lower outer corner of plates. In good plus condition.

Degousée, (1795-1862) and Laurent, (1821- 1861) were French geologists and engineers. Both worked on the geology and Tertiary stratigraphy of France. Much of their work was connected to the surveying and drilling of artesian wells, primarily in the Tertiary of the Paris Basin, oil wells, drilling exploration for ores. The text provides an historical review of the history of  resource exploration, an overview of the principles of geology, techniques used in exploration, instruments used and the principles of exploration.
