The work is complete and in the original dark tan decoratively stamped cloth with gilt spine titles. The binding is tight and clean, inner hinges expertly re-enforced, spine lightly faded. Text and map are clean and bright, partially uncut at rear, inscribed by the author to his cousin.
William Westgarth (1815 – 1889) was a Scottish-born merchant, historian, statistician and politician in Australia. He became a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council and, later, the Victorian Legislative Council. The book covers the history and development of the gold mines, the geography and climate of the region, the Aborigines, politics and government.
