Holland (1848-1932) was the eighth Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh (1891–1901) and Director of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. He was an accomplished zoologist and paleontologist, as well as an ordained Presbyterian minister.?Peterson (1865-1933) was a Swedish vertebrate paleontologist who emigrated to the United States and joined the Carnegie Museum staff. Peterson is noted for his studies of fossil mammals and published numerous monographs and papers on the subject.The fossil material on which the above study is based was discovered in 1904 by Peterson in the Tertiary beds along the Upper Niobrara River in western Nebraska. Excavations of these rich fossil deposits were to span four field seasons.
