A German mineralogist and mining engineer, Gurlt (1829-1902) worked externsively in the mining regions in Austria. However, he is best remembered for wrongly identifying a small mass of iron found buried in Wolfsegg am Hausruck, Austria as a meteorite when it was in fact a piece of cast iron used as ballast in mining machinery.?Gurlt’s small text “Ubersicht Der Pyrogenneten” provides an outline for students in mineralogy and crystallography.
