The set is complete and in the original rust brown cloth with gilt titles and stamped boards. The bindings are tight and clean, corners slightly bumped, the text pages are very clean and free of markings. A very good set.
Sir John William Kaye (1814-1876) was a British military historian, civil servant and army officer. From 1832 to 1841 he was an officer in the Bengal Artillery commissioned on 14 December 1832 as a Bengal artillery cadet, but resigned his commission in 1841. He then spent several years writing on Britain’s experiences in India and especially the disastrous war in Afghanistan. His two volume set History of the War in Afghanistan” was a popular and scholarly work. First published in 1851 the work was republished in 1858 and 1874. In 1871 he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (K.C.S.I) His two volume set is based on the letters and journals of those who were a part of that war.
