Holmes (1859-1915) was an American geologist and professor of the geology and natural history at the University of North Carolina before becoming the state geologist. His beautifully produced map is in 8 colors denoting the various geological formations and ages. Also on the map are symbols denoting the various mineral deposits. The gold deposits are shown west and southwest of Hendersonville as well as in the area of Charlotte. Also included are three inset cross sections and profiles.
