Hollister, (1834-1892) was an author, historian, Civil War soldier, newspaper editor, and publicist. He settled in Missouri City, Colorado in 1860. Hollister enlisted in the First Colorado Calvary in 1861, seeing action in southern Colorado and New Mexico.  He was discharged in 1863 due to injuries received in the service. He formed a partnership and published the Daily Mining Journal from 1863 through 1865, serving as the Chief editor and proprietor of the newspaper. After selling the paper he worked for the Register and in 1868 was the editor of the Rocky Mountain News. Hollister wrote “Mines of Colorado” in 1867. The work is an extensive and detailed description of the mines, mining districts, and mineral resources. The map is quite rare and is often missing from the work.
