 Gunther (1848-1923) was a German Professor of geography, mathematician and historian of science and mathematics. For several years he was also a member of the Reichstag where he represented liberal causes. His above work is a history of the progress in inorganic natural sciences in the 19th century with an emphasis on the advances in Germany.
