Herbert Ernest Gregory (1869–1952) was Yale University geologist and was well known for his early 20th-century studies of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona and Utah. His seminal work included mapping much of the bedrock geology of the Colorado Plateau region. His field research led him to identify, name and describe the Upper Triassic Chinle Formation which is famous for preserving extensive fossil evidence of terrestrial ecosystems. Within the above study, Gregory describes the geography, sedimentary rock strata and the various formations, the igneous rocks and their petrography, the structural geology, the physiography and the ore deposits.
