Donnelly (1831-1901) was an American politician from Minnesota and Republican member of Congress. However he is best remembered for his two books; Atlantis the Antediluvian World and Ragarok. In Ragarok he expounded his belief the the Flood, as well as the destruction of Atlantis and the extinction of the mammoth had been brought about by the near collision of the Earth with a massive comet 12,000 years ago. His books were well received by the public but not by the scientific community. One exception was the writer and catastrophist Immanuel Velikovsky (1895-1979) who wrote the work “Worlds in Collision” in 1950. In that well received work he also reinterprets the history of early civilization. These theories have never been put to rest.
