Quarto, pp. 694, 22 plates, 5 maps including the folding 1845 “Map of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky Mountains in the year 1842 and to Oregon and California in the years 1843-4" by Charles Preuss. and Stockton, John; Report of the Secretary of War communicating a Report of John Stockton, Superintendent of the Mineral Lands on Lake Superior. Washington, Senate Ex. Doc., No. 175. 1845. pp. 22, folded map (21 inches by 11 inches) titled: Map of the Mineral Lands upon Lake Superior ceded to the United States Government by the Treaty of 1842 with the Chippeway Indians”.

The two works are complete and bound as a set in a modern full calf with gilt titles. The binding is tight and very clean. The text is clean and bright, plates and maps are clean and bright. The large folded Fremont/Preuss map is rolled and in a separate archival case with map rebacked with archival tissue with minor wear at folds. The Stockton map is bright and very clean with short tear at spine gutter. A very good set of two important works on the exploration of the American west and Michigan’s mineral regions.

This rare atlas is complete and in the original limp vellum with black spine titles. String ties are perished, light soiling to boards. Very early damp stain to lower margin of text and maps has had archival treatment.

The work is complete and bound with two other studies from the same AJS issue on the mineralogy of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Bound in a modern archival folder. Binding is tight and clean, studies in a contemporary blue wrap with early penned notation and title label. Text is lightly soiled at margins, map is clean. In very good condition.

Large quarto special large paper copy, pp. viii, errata, 428, frontispiece, 2 (1 handcoloured) folded engraved maps and 16 (1 handcoloured) lithographed plates.

This large paper copy with wide margins is complete and in the original binders wraps with the original paper spine label. The wraps are scuffed with the spine starting to split and a few signatures starting. Owners stamp on verso of frontispiece, short section torn from half title but not effecting print, text is clean, map is very clean, light foxing to margins of some plates. Over all in very good condition.

Atlas, two copper engraved folded maps, (hand colored), 27 engraved plates of fossils, 19 folded engraved plates of profiles, sections, and views (many hand colored).

The set is complete and in the original decorative embossed cloth with gilt spine and cover titles. Bindings are tight, text volume re-cased with modern end sheets and spine margins restored. Inscribed to owner on end sheet. Atlas is inscribed from Senator Henry Dodge to John Brackem of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Maps and profiles have mis-folds but are intact and clean. Over all a very good set.

Book plate of mining institute on paste downs and stamp on title page and verso of some plates. The text, maps and plates are very clean. In very good condition.
