Hugh Plat (1552-1611) received his degree at St. John's College, Cambridge in 1572. He devoted his later research and attention to natural science, practical invention and agriculture publishing the results of his studies in several works, that went through numerous editions. His work “The Jewel House” was first published in 1594 and appeared in several editions with each being different. The Jewel House was Plat’s first work and of particular interest to the mineralogist for the essay by Arnold de Boate (1600-1653).
