A German seismologist and vulcanologist; Schmidt (1825-1884) introduced the term "epicentre" to geological literature in 1874. His work “ Vulkanstudien” is a study of volcanic phenomena based on examples from the eruptions of Santorini, Vesuvius, Bajae, Stromboli and Aetna.
