Daubeny (1795-1867); an English chemist, botanist and geologist, made significant contributions to the understanding of the volcanic regions of Europe. This is the 2nd and much enlarged edition of Daubeny's study on volcanoes. His work contains his observations on volcanic and earthquake activity with a tabulated study of the ancient volcanoes, and active volcanoes worldwide, as well as all recorded volcanic and earthquake activity. Within this work Daubeny also first presented his chemical theory of volcanic action which stated that such action results from penetration of water to the free alkali and alkaline earth metals supposed to exist beneath the earth's crust. He concludes the study with an excellent reference resource which is a list of all works pertaining to volcanoes and earthquakes.
