A German mineralogist, crystallographer and chemist; Kobell (1803-1882) wrote extensively on crystallography and mineralogy. He described 19 new mineral species and re-described many others.
The above bound set are two of his most popular works. The first is the rare first edition of Kobell's enlargement of Berzelius' system of mineralogy which classified minerals according to their chemical composition. In this work, Kobell expands on the chemical analyses of minerals. It is based upon the newest discoveries in mineralogy. He utilizes the theories of Naumann in crystallization. The second work is the 6th edition of a very popular work that provides a series of narratives showing the characteristics for frequently encountered mineral species, and that can be utilized in determining an unknown mineral. Many students in the universities of Germany and abroad faithfully used these tables in their studies of minerals.  The text went through 17 German editions and was translated into French, Swedish, English, Spanish and Russian.
