Born in Stralsund stud Konigsberg; Hartmann (1648-1707) was a Professor of Medicine and History and is best known for his study of Baltic amber.
In its time this work was the best and most thorough work on amber and its occurrences. The book is in two parts. The first part discusses amber and its occurrences, contains the first accurate details on the amber deposits in Prussia, amber mining and amber fisheries, the forms of amber, insects in amber, and the Baltic amber miners. There are descriptions of the working of amber, its colors and qualities and uses, laws governing amber mining and trade.
The second part of the book discusses the origins of amber and Hartmann cites the opinions of older authorities back to ancient writings and discounts all of these. He treats the physical and chemical properties of amber and advances his own theory that amber formed as a fluid in cavities of fossilized wood. The work is quite rare.
