Schmidt was the rector of the Bern Gymnasium and wrote on the temperature of the earth, the causes of changes in the temperatures and the consequences of those changes. Within his short work on the deluge he attributes the flood to changes in the internal temperature of the earth generating vapors and waters which broke through the Earth’s surface and caused the deluge. The work is very rare with few copies recorded.
