A Swedish mineralogist and chemist at Upsala; Wallerius (1709-1785) wrote the first definitive handbook on mineralogy (Mineralogia, 1747) thus establishing a firm foundation for the science. It was the first work to contain a systematic description of such a large number of minerals. Wallerius provides a concise name for each mineral, its chemical characteristics, and assigns an order, class genera and species to each. The above work is the 2nd edition of his "System of Mineralogy" in two volumes which was first published in 1772. The work includes a Latin, Swedish, and German name index at the end of each volume.
