Kenngott (1818-1897) Kenngott was a German mineralogist and crystallographer. He was first a docent at the University of Breslau, before becoming an assistant in the management of the Hofmineralien-Cabinett in Vienna In 1875, he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the Polytechnical University of Zurich. From 1875 onward he also took on the role of director of the University. He is distinguished for his researches on mineralogy, crystallography and petrology.
His above work on crystal models was intended for students. The work is a series of plates containing figures for the construction of models of crystals. The outline of the faces of various crystalline forms is given and they are so arranged that it is only necessary to cut out the figures from the plates and bend the planes into their places, to make the model. The sheets of figures were first pasted on Bristol board so the models would have the firmness and durability desired. Thus the work was never intended to be preserved in its original state. This led to a complete set being very rare. Schuh in his Biobibliography of Mineralogy shows a 1st edition being in 1857. The copy offered here has an earlier date of 1856.
