Gilbert (1843-1918) was an American geomorphologist, structural geology and stratigrapher. He worked with the Wheeler survey from 1871-1874, the Powell survey from 1874-1876 and subsequently with the USGS. He is considered by many historians as a pioneer of the study of the Basin and Range of the western United States. The above work is the 2nd edition of Gilbert's classic report on the "lacoliths" forming the Henry Mountains which were named by J. W. Powell in 1869 in honor of Joseph Henry the physicist and first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The chapter on the intrusives of the Henry Mountains is by Clarence Dutton. Within this report, Gilbert recognized the intrusive nature of the Henry Mountains and coined the term "Laccoliths". The second edition differs from the first edition with the addition of a few corrections and the addition of an appendix. The river called Dirty Devil in the first edition is now called the Fremont River within the text but the change was not made to Plate 1 where it is still called the Dirty Devil.
