This is Hayden's first report as the official geologist on the Warren Expedition. He provides a summation of the stratigraphy and structure along a line from the Missouri River to Fort Union. The partially hand-colored map is his first attempt at a geological map of a portion of the territory. The most striking feature on the map is the lack of detail paid to the Black Hills. The region of the Black Hills is noted but the geology is lacking on this early map.
