A French geologist and hydrologist; Belgrand (1810-1878) is best known for his studies of the Paris Basin and River Seine. An abbreviated first edition of the above work was published in 1869. It consisted of 56 pages and 80 plates. The second edition was published after Belgrands death. The author provides a detailed description of the later stratigraphy, mammalian fossils, fossil human sites, and fossil conchology of the Paris Basin.
