Georg August Goldfuss (1782-1848), was a German paleontologist born at Thurnau near Bayreuth. He was educated at Erlangen and was subsequently appointed professor of zoology and mineralogy in the university of Bonn. He is best remembered for his massive work Petrefacta Germaniae (1826-1844), a work which was intended to illustrate the invertebrate fossils of Germany. In addition he published many early pioneering studies of fossil vertebrates such as the one above.
