The text is complete and in a 19th century calf with gilt titles, marbled end sheets. Book plate of the famous geologist Jules Marcou on paste down with canceled book plate of the A.M.N.H. and later owners book plate. The binding is tight and very clean, text has some light foxing. A very rare work in very good condition.

Horace H. Hayden (1769-1844), was an American dentist, born in Windsor, Connecticut, and died in Baltimore, Maryland. He is considered the “Father of Professional Dentistry”. His family  was impoverished by the American Revolution and Horace Hayden started teaching school at sixteen years of age. He studied dentistry, and in 1804 settled in Baltimore where he became quite famous in the field of dentistry. He also studied medicine, and geology and was often called on for consultation by the chief physicians of Baltimore. His correspondence in Europe on geology, botany. and dental science was also quite extensive. He was a member of many learned societies. In 1820 Hayden published "Geological Essays, or an Inquiry into Geological Phenomena to be found in Various Parts of America which Benjamin Silliman stated in a review “should be a text book in all our schools".
