Item Number: Book-512e

King, William; A Monograph of the Permian Fossils of England. London, Pal. Soc., 1850. Quarto, pp. xxxvii, 258, 29 plates (some folded, numbered 1-28*).

The work is complete with all of the important folded plates of fossil fish present. In recent calf and marbled boards. The binding is tight and clean. light browning to margins of text, the plates are very clean. The plates are quite beautiful with the invertebrate fossil plates being illustrated by G. B. Sowerby.  In very good condition.

An English paleontologist; King (1809-1886), published several studies on invertebrate and vertebrate Permian fossils. His above work is based on studies of fossils from deposits overlying the coal-measures in northern England. Using Murchison's stratigraphy in which he defined the Permian, King divides the Permian in the North of England into six members. He discusses each member and the invertebrate and vertebrate fossils found in each. The work contains a wealth of information on the Permian fishes found in England.
