FREE SHIPPING ON ALL ITEMS Phillips, (1800-1874) an English stratigrapher, paleontologist and geologist was a nephew of William Smith (father of stratigraphy). Amongst Phillips' many works on geology and mineralogy was a biography of Smith. He was First Keeper of Yorkshire Museum and taught at King's College, London, Trinity College in Dublin and finally at University of Oxford. He wrote extensively on the geology of Yorkshire and Oxford, the fossils of Somerset, Cornwall and Devon, the vulcanology of Mount Vesuvius and the origins of life. His textbook on geology was first published as Treatise on Geology in 1837 and as demand for the work increased it was expanded to two volumes with Seeley and Etheridge editing the much expanded 1885 printing.
