Rare Paleontology Book, Francis A. Bather; Studies in Edrioasteroidea

Bather, Francis A.; Studies in Edrioasteroidea, Parts I-IX. Published by the author at Wimbledon, England, October, 1915. Large octavo, pp. viii, over 200 pages, approximately 20 plates.

This self published rare work is complete and on the original title wraps. Binding is tight with blind stamp and rubber stamp on cover. The text and plates are very clean. Inscribed by Bather to noted Canadian banker, political figure and amateur paleontologist Sir Edmund Walker (1848-1924). In very good condition.

An English inverbterate paleontologist and curator at the British Museum of Natural History, Bather (1863-1934) completed extensive curatorial work on its collections. His major contributions were devoted to echinoderms, especially crinoids and their morphology. His self published work offered here is quite rare. It consists of nine papers on fossil crinoids and their morphology originally published between 1898 and 1915 in Geological Magazine. Of particular interest is the association related to this work. It was presented to Sir Edmund Walker (1863-1934). He was the president of the Canadian Bank of Commerce from 1907 to 1924, and a generous patron of the arts, helping to found and nurture many of Canada's cultural and educational institutions, including the University of Toronto, National Gallery of Canada, Champlain Society, Appleby College, Art Gallery of Ontario and The Royal Ontario Museum. In 1910, King George V knighted Walker for his contributions to business and the arts. In addition to his other activities, Walker was an avid amateur paleontologist with a special interest in crinoids.
