Patterson left Boston for California in February 1849, and arrived in California in July 1849. He started for the mines six days later and for the next twelve years worked his diggings near Georgetown, in El Dorado County. He remained a miner the entire time and thus was one one of the few Forty-niners to remain faithful to the business of mining. In addition to describing the gold region. Patterson also describes his own experiences as a miner. The book also contains information on the gold region, the discover of gold, the geology of the gold region, conditions found, and advice to new miners.
