Charles and Mary Lyell visited North America four times from 1841 to 1853. During the first three visits, Lyell also lectured in addition to his extensive travels. The lectures were great successes with the American public which seemed to thirst for knowledge regarding the natural world. His first visit included eight lectures in New York City. After an initial 1st edition of the published lectures in 1842, Lyell published a revised and corrected 2nd edition in 1843 and added an additional lecture on the races of men by Smith. The other eight lectures remained the same and were on: extinct volcanoes and the geology of the Auvergne region in central France. The structure of the volcano Aetna and origins of grantic rocks. Upheaval and subsidence of the earth's crust. Origin of coral reefs and coraline limestones of various ages. The nature and origin of coal and its age. Fossil footmarks. The recession of the falls of Niagara and the geology of Niagara. The formation of boulders and transporting boulders by the action of glaciers and icebergs.
