He is noted for his studies of the Mammalian fauna of California, especially at Rancho La Brea. His studies interpreted the paleoecology and paleoclimatology of the deposits. Stock developed his interest in La Brea as a student under Merriam. Within the above work he focuses on the ground-sloth remains (Megalonyx). He reviews the known literature beginning with Thomas Jefferson's paper in the American Philosophical Society in describing bones found in a Virginia cavern which belonged to the species "Magalonyx". This is followed by a discussion of the geological range and distribution of the species, and their distribution in western North America. The bulk of the work centers on the occurrence of ground sloths at Rancho la Brea, a description of the material and its classification.
