Hunter (1729-1809) was a Scottish physician and naturalist born in Edinburgh. He pursued a lifelong interest in agriculture, soils and geology and in 1769 published a series of four essays on the subjects. The essays were well received and in 1770 he published five more. In 1777 he combined the essays into the above book, and added several unpublished essays. The essays cover soils and their relationship to geology, agricultural processes and the dependence of plants on good soils, farming implements and methods of growing crops.
