Draper (1849-1929) was a South African geologist who spent much of his career studying diamond deposits in Brazil and S. Africa. Frames was a South African archaeologist and geologist who devoted much of his career to the study of artifacts in S. Africa and early mining implements used by the indigenous tribes. The above work on diamonds is quite scarce and was written to aid prospectors in locating new pipes or alluvial diamond deposits. The authors provide detailed information on the properties of diamonds, associated minerals, type of deposits, descriptions of existing pipe mines, prospecting procedures and recovery methods. The plates show a kimberlite specimen in color with a diamond crystal and associated minerals, a section of pipe, a geological cross section, and a partly colored map.
