Silliman (1779-1864) was an American chemist, geologist, and physicist. He was born in Trumbull, Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1796. In 1802 he was appointed first professor of chemistry and natural history at Yale. After traveling abroad Silliman returned to Yale and taught until 1853. In addition to his teaching duties, Silliman wrote extensively and also was the founder and editor (1818–46) of the American Journal of Science and Arts. That journal is still published today. He was the first president of the Association of American Geologists, which became (1848) the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a founding member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a prominent figure in the establishment of the medical school at Yale. His two volume text book "Elements of Chemistry" is considered the first American chemistry text which was considered an equal to the well established European chemistry texts. During his travels in Europe, Silliman was greatly influenced by the quality and depth of the scientific texts books and sought to succeeded in bringing that same solid quality to American institutions.
