An English paleontologist; Conybeare (1787-1857) is best know for his studies of plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs and for the above work, which he collaborated on with the English mineralogist Phillips (1800-1834). Phillips had intended to publish two small volumes on the geology of England and Wales. When Phillips circulated the first part of the two part work, he received a letter from Conybeare making several corrections to the work and adding much new data. Thus the two collaborated on the above work but retained the "part 1" notation from Phillip's original manuscript. The work is of major importance to the history of British geology.
