A professor of mineralogy at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Lewis (1853-1888) wrote extensively on petrology. Bonney (1833-1923) a prominent British petrologist edited and published the above work after Lewis's death. The first two parts of this work contain two lectures delivered by Lewis before the British Association at their meetings in 1886 and 1887. The first paper is on diamond discoveries in South Africa. The second paper contains a thorough treatment of the rock which contains the diamonds in the South African pipes and the minerals found in those rocks. The third part of the work is a thorough treatment of the known kimberlites in the United States.
