A French diplomat, traveller and antiquarian; Volney (1757-1820) travelled extensively in the Middle East and North America. His writings contain some of the first recorded description of geological features in the United States. Volney supported Werner's Neptunist views of rock genesis. While in America he resided in Richmond, Virginia and influenced the American architect and engineer Benjamin Latrobe who also accepted the Wernerian teachings to explain the geology of the eastern United States.
