Jukes (1811-1869), an English stratigrapher and geologist, started his career as the geological surveyor of Newfoundland from 1839 to 1841. From their he was the naturalist on the H. M. S. Fly voyage to Australia and New Zealand. He published "A Sketch of the Physical Structure of Australia" which was a major contribution to the geology of Australia. The work contained the first published complete map of Australia. Upon his return to Europe he worked for the Geological Survey of Great Britain and published important works on parts of England and then worked on the geology of Ireland. He was to become director of the Geological Survey of Ireland in 1850. He is noted for his important work in Irish geology and geomorphology and especially for his above geological map of Ireland which was published just after his death in 1869. The map is in sixteen colors and is considered the most beautiful geological map of Ireland published.
