All of the Annual Reports are complete with all but three in the original brown cloth binding with gilt spine titles. Two reports are in the original presentation calf over marbled boards with gilt titles and marbled end sheets. One report is in a later black cloth with gilt titles. All bindings are tight, one binding has a light spine stain not effecting the interior. All of the volumes are clean internally with no water staining or underlining. The maps in the octavo size atlas have been re-enforced on the back of folds to prevent splitting. The maps are clean. The large atlas was re-cased and has a later spine. Light staining to covers and a mining institute stamp on the title page. The maps are clean with a very minor damp margin at the upper edge of a few pages. Hayden (1829-1887) was a geologist and explorer. Early in life he became a doctor, but his acquaintance with the New York paleontologist James Hall introduced him to geology after Hall sponsored him and F. B. Meek on an expedition to the South Dakota Bad Lands to collect fossil specimens. Between 1867 and 1878 he was in charge of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, leading expeditions into Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming , Utah, Montana, Nebraska, the Dakotas and Kansas. These reports detail the results of the various expeditions and contain a wealth of newly discovered accurate information on areas of Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. The various authors of reports provide some of the first detailed studies of the Yellowstone region and its geysers, some of the first descriptions of fossil vertebrates from the west and the first accurate observations of the stratigraphy and structure of parts of the Rocky Mountains. The complete set offered here is a cornerstone to any collection on explorations of the western United States.
