The set is complete and is bound in late 19th century blue half-calf and marbled boards, with gilt spine panels and titles, marbled text edges and end sheets. Minor shelf scuffing to bindings. The text and plates are very clean. In very good condition.
A Russian explorer and politician; Timkovski travelled extensively in China and Mongolia and was instrumental in the establishment of a diplomatic mission in Peking. His above narrative of his travels was first published in Russian in 1824 and translated to French by Heinrich Julius Klaproth; a close friend of Alexander von Humboldt. Timkovski provides a description of the geography, resources, manners and customs of the people throughout China, Mongolia and Turkestan.
