Sopwith, (1803-1879), an English mining engineer and geologist, is noted for his studies of the mining regions of England, especially in the regions of Northumberland, Durham and Forest of Dean. He authored two major studies on mines in these regions. He also wrote what was then considered the definitive civil engineering and surveying text for mining engineers and colliers. The work is extremely scare since many of the copies were put to the intended use as a reference work while in the field.
