An American vertebrate paleontologist and zoologist; Cope (1840-1897) made important contributions to our understanding of both living and fossil vertebrates. He is noted for work on the Permian reptiles of Texas and dinosaurs. Cope is also remembered for his competition in field collecting and research with Marsh and the bitter rivalry between the two. Cope published His "Tertiary Vertebrata" and "Cretaceous Vertebrata" as volumes two and three of the Hayden monograph series. It was his intention to publish volume 4 as a second part to the Tertiary volume and also a volume on the Permian vertebrata. Those volumes were never published. The above work is commonly referred to as "Cope's Bible". Within this volume Cope discusses the Eocene vertebrate fauna of the Puerco, Wasatch and Bridger Formations and the Lower and Middle vertebrate fauna of the White River and John Day formations. The fauna of the Puerco group was newly discovered material described here for the first time as was much of the material from the White River and John Day Formations. Much of the information is still considered valid today. Due to the size of the work, the original binding is usually in poor condition. We had this copy restored with the original binding preserved.
