Macomb finished his report on the above expedition in 1860 but the work along with Newberry's geological observations was not published until 1876. The report covered the observations along routes between Santa Fe, New Mexico and the junctions of the Colorado River and Green River. The map is considered by Wheat to be "one of the most beautiful published by the Army". It was done by the noted geographer and cartographer; Egloffstein using a method similar to that used in the Ive's works on the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon is referred to as the "Big Canon". The map shows many of the routes over passes in the southwest, as well as the routes traveled by early explorers. It is the first map to show a route to the junction of the Green and the Grand (Colorado) Rivers and is without a doubt the finest map produced by Egloffstein. The work contains 11 hand-colored lithographed and 3 lithographed landscape plates of views, 8 lithographed plates of fossils, and the large folding lithographed map bound at rear of report ("Map of Explorations and Surveys in New Mexico and Utah."
