A Swiss physician; Lusser (1790-1859) is best remembered for his early interpretations of the geology of the Swiss Alps. He published the initial results of his geological studies through the Alps in 1839. After further research and revisions he published the above work complete with detailed geological sections. The two hand-colored profiles are stunning. The first measures over 42 inches (titled "Westseite des Querthales von Erstfelden bis Aart") and the second over 57 inches (titled "Ost Seite des Querthales von Art bis am Steg"). The different strata are portrayed in 12 colors. Each shows the stratigraphic and structural features as interpreted by Lusser. The various villages etc. encountered along each section are also noted.
