An English physician and quinologist; John Eliot Howard(1807-1883) will long be remembered for the above worrk. "Quinology" is his rare work on the cultivation of quinine producing trees. The work was the result of his often microscopical observations of the bark of all forms of cinchona, which had been introduced into India from the Andes by Markham, Spruce and Cross. Howard's goal was to identify the species giving the best yield of quinine. The importance this publication and his contribution to the development of quinine is widely acknowledged. In 1874 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. The lithographs are stunning and precisely handcoloured. Howard was assisted in the preparation of the work by the noted physician and naturalist Joseph D. Hooker and dedicates the work to Hooker.
