Little is known about this rare work on metals and metal mining. Hoffman wrote the work as a dissertation on metal mining with Bohmer presenting a response to the dissertation. The beautifully engraved folded title page illustrates a cross cut of the typical underground workings of a mine showing the timbering, hoisting and shaft apparatus, and miners. The surface view shows mining engineers surveying and studying samples.
