Greenwell; (1821-1900) an English mining engineer and geologist, is especially noted for his studies of the Somersetshire Coal regions. In his above work, Greenwell discusses the applications of geology and paleontology to tracing strata and the locating of ore bodies, especially coal layers. He then presents the methods used in mining, tunneling, working the ore body, ventilation in the deeper mines as well as lighting and safety. The work is illustrated with beautiful colored plates showing various ore bodies, fossil plants and fauna, coke ovens, boring apparatus, M.Kind's boring machine, dams, sinking apparatus, sinking timbering and walling, sinking gin, pulley frames and shear legs, a cornish engine of thirty horse power, various condensing engines for drawing coals and pumping water, pumping apparatus, crabs, shaft, cages and coal tubs, coal and ironstone workings, an underground hauling engine, ventilating apparatus, and safety lamps.
